It is a fact that water has a significant role in our lives as we cannot survive without it. Unfortunately, due to the changes in the climate, many countries are facing an increase in water shortages. Hence, they have to act in order to combat this rising issue so countries often have a reservoir and dams to store water. However, this is not a permanent solution as it will not last forever. Another resource of water often used is underground water and in fact, this is becoming very important and more popular these days, particularly in Malta. We use water pumps to draw water from the ground by means of a pump so that we can use it for drinking, agriculture and to use in our home.

In this article we will elaborate on the uses of domestic and agricultural pumps as well as giving suggestions for pump products which are currently on the market. When it comes to the types of the pump there are two main types. These are; the domestic water pump and agriculture water pumps. These two types are further divided into a number of categories which we will discuss below. We use domestic water to draw water for our domestic purposes, mainly for supplying water to our homes. This type is not very powerful as we do not need a large force to deliver water to our homes. On the other hand, agriculture pumps are very powerful and the main source for irrigation in rural areas.

Types of Domestic Pumps

The first type of pump we will discuss is centrifugal pumps. This type of pump uses centrifugal force to pump out water and is mostly operated by an electric motor. A centrifugal pump in a jet engine is operated on the same mechanism. Centrifugal pumps work by converting the rotational energy from a motor to induce a flow or raise the pressure of liquid. When a fluid enters from the suction end of the pump, the impeller catches the fluids and then rotates, which makes the fluid entering the pump rotate as well. They are designed to pump clear water that is free from any solid impurity. Hence, they were mainly used for supplying water to homes, filling swimming pools, draining water tanks, and for irrigating the garden.

Submersible Pumps

The second type of domestic pumps is the submersible which is submerged underwater. The motor of the pump is often concealed and mostly used in borewells and wells. As they are already in the water, so no priming is needed for them. Moreover, it has further two types; tube well submersible pumps and well submersible pumps.

Recently, submersible pumps have gained in popularity when it comes to both the industrial and domestic context. This is because they are highly versatile, reliable and efficient.

They make use of propellers which are connected by a single shaft which is then connected to an induction motor. Once the water enters, it gains kinetic energy and pressure and it is thrown outwards.

Borewell Compressor Pumps

This type is designed to draw water from borewells as deep as six hundred and fifty feet. This can be effectively used for agriculture, industry and domestic purposes. It uses air pressure to pull the water from the top where the borewells contain less water.

Pressure Booster Pumps

This type is designed to boost the pressure and flow of the water. Pressure booster pumps are especially used to increase the pressure of water being supplied in homes. However, they can also be used for moving water from a tank, or even for commercial application. We need to install them in places where the pressure of the water is too low.

A booster pump works just like a fan. It has blades that spin around and it boosts the air movement and water pressure. This type of pump has very significant components which are a constant, regardless of the manufacturer. These are a motor which makes the impeller spin, these then move the water. There is also an inlet and an outlet for the water. A pressure tank is connected in the unit that supplies water to provide constant pressure across all pipes which makes it very suitable for residential complexes which may not get enough pressure and water flow from a city supply. So if you collect water into a tank, in order to use it, you pump it out of the tank and into the house. Whether you are flushing toilets, or using it for laundry. This system works well for these purposes. In this case, different pumps apply different levels of pressure and choosing a suitable one becomes important as too much pressure can impact the plumbing system.

There are many benefits to investing in a pump system. They are easy to install and customers can buy all-in-one units with the pump, valves, motor and sensor offer maximum convenience. They are installed in areas where the water pressure is very low and can also be kept in locations that don’t make them prone to freezing. For example, a good application would be to install a booster pump in a basement, which will then improve the pressure to the kitchen, to the bathrooms and the showers.

It is extremely important when purchasing one of these products is to have a way to test the pump without having to run water through the house. Sometimes a leak can occur and the pump will cycle because you have very little flow rate. It may turn on and run for a second, and then turn back off. This is typically activated by a flow rate or by pressure. So if you have a leak, it is vital to be able to test it by having the ability to isolate it to then be able to see whether the pump is the problem or not, and address the leak problem.

Shallow Well Pumps

This type is mostly used in rural areas for shallow wells. It has an eight meters suction head that provides great suction capacity.

Stuart

Now we shall discuss the range of pumps which we at V.Demajo have on offer. Most of our pump products are by the brand Stuart. This is the top manufacturer of water boosting solutions used primarily in residential related applications. We value this particular brand, not only for its impeccable products but for the values of the company itself. It has three key values.

The first is Quality. They are committed to providing the highest degree of quality in every product & service of the company. The second is Integrity. They behave in a manner that is transparent, demonstrating trust, honesty, and responsibility. This is an extremely important factor for us. Last but not least, the third one which is Customer satisfaction.  They work to provide exceptional and consistent products that are proven time and time again to be more than capable of providing for their customers’ needs.

Products

When it comes to heavy duty pumps, the Stuart Submersible Pump – DIVER 45 is a great option for all consumers out there. As the name implies, it is a submersible pump which is continuously rated highly among customers. This pump consists of a durable polypropylene and stainless steel material and a mechanical seal material of nitrite, carbon, and ceramic, as well as a plastic impeller.

This has a flow rate of up to ninety four liters per minute and heads up to forty five meters. These pumps are ideal for clean water applications where pressure is needed, such as sprinklers or pumping up to storage tanks.

This product also comes with an externally fitted floating switch which is a pump control which protects against dry running. This occurs when a pump operates without adequate liquid. This leads to a dramatic increase in pressure, flow or overheating that will quickly lead to pump failure. As a result, the pumping elements seize up on the shaft and will face significant damage. So this preventative measure is vital for the continuous smooth running of this machine. Other features include automatic and manual operation modes for the user to choose from.

If the buyer is a more frugal one and is thus opting for a cheaper option, the STUART Submersible Pump – SUPERVORT 240A could be a great choice. This Pump has a flow rate of up to two hundred and forty liters per minute, heading up to 7.4 meters. The Supervort 240A submersible pumps are designed for the transference of dirty water and are capable of handling semi-solids in suspension of up to 20 mm diameter. This pump is compact in design, easy to install and features an external adjustable float switch. It is also fitted with an automatic float switch in order to protect against dry running.

Tallas

Another company which has great pumps that we sell at V.Demajo is Tallas. This company Tallas is world renowned for its Italian design and taste, and for its pumps which are extremely easy to handle, and have also been conceived for difficult spaces. Tallas is a complete range of DIY pumps suitable for domestic uses. These vary from garden irrigation, to garage and cellar draining and pumping of wells and tanks, up to those models that.

A more heavy duty pump option is the Tallas Centrifugal Inverter Technology Pump – D-ECONCEPT 1000. This product has by far the best features which are on offer. As the name suggests, this is a centrifugal inverter technology pump. That is, it has an integrated inverter for constant pressure. Its flow rates go up to five thousand one hundred liters per hour, heading up to sixty meters equivalent to a six bar performance. This is an energy saving option with the usual inlet and outlet as well as anti-vibration rubber feet to keep the vibration to a minimum. It also consists of a water cooled motor which ensures there is less noise  as well as a longer life.

This particular pump is also known as a self priming pump. This describes a centrifugal pump that can use an air-water mixture to reach a fully-primed pumping condition. That is, the “self-priming” centrifugal pump overcomes the problem of air binding by mixing air with water to create a fluid with pumping properties much like those of regular water. The pump then gets rid of the air and moves water only. The integrated electronic system is equipped with inverter technology for energy saving and for maintenance of constant pressure. Innovative product, easy to use. Dry run protection included. Equipped with orientable connections plus integrated non-return valve pre-filter for extended pump life. Facility to empty residual water to protect it from frost and accumulation of limescale also included.

The TALLAS Centrifugal Automatic Pressure Switch Multistage Pump – D-EMULTI 1000/40 is by far the smallest and lightest pump which customers can opt for. It consists of an inlet and outlet, as well as an Automatic Pressure Switch which is integrated into the unit. The flow rates are up to 4800 liters per hour heads up to a staggering forty meters. This is a great value for money.
We hope that we have provided sufficient information to be able to guide our customers in the right direction when it comes to the uses, as well as the different options of pumps we have currently on offer. This is because water is a vital life source which we believe everyone should have a right to and should be educated in a way that will enable everyone and anyone to seek out the means necessary to make use of their rights.
